Does Lemon Water Really Help You Lose Weight?

I recently became the proud owner of a few extra pounds. Nothing crazy but enough for me to take notice and decide to reverse the process. I love to stay in the best shape possible so I can enjoy optimal health. Since that level is different for everyone, I don’t follow any set formula. I just know what weight feels best for me. The funny thing is that I already eat a very healthy diet and exercise. So, I wasn’t exactly sure what to do to send those little rascals away. Hmmmm… what to do… what to do…

Then I remembered something my Great Aunt told me years ago. She told me about a drink she had every single morning of her adult life. She lived into her late 90’s, never had a weight problem, had beautiful skin and excellent health. So maybe her beauty and health “secret” had some merit. This is what she told me she drank every day. She squeezed the juice of one fresh lemon into a cup, added warm water and drank that each morning before she drank or ate anything else.

Sounded simple enough so I decided to give it a shot. I bought a bag of organic lemons, found my glass citrus juicer and made myself a nice big mug of lemon water. I happen to love the tart taste of lemons so to me it was quite refreshing. Even if it didn’t help me lose any weight I enjoyed the drink and continued drinking it every morning for a few days.

Well, lo and behold, I started to drop a few pounds. That made me go online and research lemon juice to see if it actually helps in weight loss. I couldn’t believe how many articles I found advocating this delicious, healthy drink. Here are some of the benefits I read about:

1- Boosts immune system
2- Helps your digestive system
3- Aids in detoxifying the body
4- Helps reduce hunger cravings
5- Balances your pH level
6- Clears your skin
7- Freshens your breath
8- Quenches thirst better than commercial fruit juice or carbonated drinks
9- And so many more I can’t list them all

Since I’m not a doctor or scientist I can’t verify the accuracy of all these claims, but I can tell you that I am personally getting wonderful results. And if you go online to do the research yourself (which I encourage) you’ll see that a lot of other people are enjoying the benefits as well.

So, every morning now I’ve been drinking my lemon water. Sometimes I drink it warm and sometimes cool. Sometimes I add some cucumber slices and sometimes fresh mint leaves – just for a little variety. I’ve heard that pure lemon juice can be hard on the enamel of your teeth so I drink it with my glass straw. And I never, ever, ever, ever use the juice from a bottle or little plastic container. Never!!!

The next time you are in the supermarket and you see fresh lemons, pick up a few and try it out. I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

      Great question, Pascaline. I use a glass straw to drink my lemon water so that it bypasses my teeth. My teeth were very sensitive at one time as well so I understand the feeling you are talking about. I hope that helps.

      You can just use cucumber and mint leaves like she said and also, if you like, you could put watermelon slices in your water because watermelon has an element in it that can help you lose weight! I’m sorry, I forgot but you could like more into it! I love lemon water(:

      Hi Soraya!
      There are many reasons not to use the lemonjuice in a plastic container. Often there are preservatives added as well as the possibility of plastic leaching into the juice. Plus, you have no idea how long it’s been sitting on a shelf somewhere. It’s so easy to grab a fresh lemon and squeeze it yourself – I recommend that option. I hope that helps!

        Well, The Real Lemon in a bottle is just a bunch of lemons juiced into one bottle. I use it and it works fine. They commit to not adding anything to there lemon juice.

        Thanks for your feedback, Aubrey. The way I look at it, the juice from an organic lemon, that I squeeze myself, is fresh and alive. Anything that’s been purchased in a bottle was probably pasteurized which means it’s been heated to a high enough level to kill any bacteria. Plus, I have no idea how long it’s been sitting on the store shelf. I’ll take the fresh lemon over the bottled lemon every time. That’s my personal preference.

      Hi Ali and thanks for your questions. Everybody is different. That I learned for sure! So, what works for me may not work for you. I find that I eat a bit less when I drink lots of lemon water. I don’t do it intentionally, but I feel fuller and don’t have as much need to eat. But, you may be different. Also, I exercise regularly. I do recommend some form of regular exercise for everyone who wants to stay healthy and fit. I hope that helps.

    I have started drinking lemon water this week, in place of just plain boring water as I would really love to loose approx 3 to 4kg but I have not seen any movement yet, however, I will continue to drink at least 1.5ltrs of lemon water per day and I will drink it first thing in the morning like your great aunt suggested and I will keep you posted. How long do you think it will take before I see some weight shift .

      Hi Rachel, I’m not a medical doctor, but if I had the same situation I would probably increase my calorie intake. Eat some more fresh, organic foods and it may level out. Let me know how it works for you.

    I have type 2 diabetes, and my question is, I walk all day at my job, and it may sound weird, but I have noticed the my body is turning flabby, mainly my inner thighs, my top, and bottom abs, I was thinking about looking into a tummy tuck, but I’m afraid. I am 51, and I am 4ft 8in, and I weigh 177. I do not understand why I walk all day except a half hour for lunch, and back on the go again. I am a activity aide, and we move constantly. I don’t know why I’m gaining the weight. I feel like a balloon, when you squeeze one end, and all of the air blows up the other end, that’s how I feel when I sit down. Will drinking the lemon water help with my situation. I walk all day, and I just can’t find the energy to work out when I get home from work. Please help me with some sugestions. Thank You Genny

        Problem is, most doctor’s will tell you natural methods are ineffective. They don’t want to loose your business. I’ve yet to hear a non celebrity doctor endorse naturopath methods. It totally goes against their code of ethics

      I never use the lemon in the bottle so I don’t know if it works. I always try to use the fresh fruit instead of something that has been reconstituted if possible. That’s what I prefer.

      Hi Noush – I’m not a doctor or a scientist, but I don’t think adding sugar will be as beneficial as drinking it without. I personally try to avoid adding sugar to my food whenever possible. I hope that helps.

    Very interesting. I use the “real lemon”in a bottle, but never really considered the important reasons for not doing this, until you pointed them out, thank you. Your Grandmother sounds like she was onto something good, beautiful skin, living into her 90’s, sounds good enough for me. I too suggest drinking through a straw for the very shames reasons you mentioned.     I am drinking lemon juice with boiled water which I prepare before having a shower, then its about the right temperture to drink. Wait a while before I have oatmeal and linseeds for breakfast with yoghurt. MY measurements have changed from , bust was 49 inches, now 45, waist 40, now 37 , hips49, now 45.Also my legs and feet and fingers have not been swelling like they were. I am type 2 diabetic and have fatty liver syndrome which I am trusting the lemon juice will help clean up, my chlorestrol has dropped but my sugar level has’nt as yet, but as I am hopeful with losing weight, 6kg so far, that the results will be improved next Drs visit. This has been over a 3month period, so it is not too fast, and I am so pleased, I will keep at it and walking much faster than before. I am 68 this month, and do I regret not doing this when I was Younger? Sure do,! So folks, save yourself and give this a go. My Dr scared the living shit out of me, litterly, saying I was headed for disaster as far as my health was concerned, just what I needed, because pills are not going to save us and only we can save ourselves, so drink lemon juice, eat lots of veges, mainly green mixed salads and give all that bread a miss plus carbs, to a small amount. All the best fellow fatties to become healthy senior citz.

      Afreen, I started seeing the scale move down the very next day. I didn’t have much weight to lose but I think I lost about 3-4 lbs. And results can vary greatly depending on many factors. I’ve heard that some people lost much more and others much less. I hope that answers your question.

      Hi Jo – That depends on two things. One is how many glasses of lemon water I’m drinking. Two is how juicy the lemons are. I can range anywhere from one to six lemons in a day. And in the summer I also like to add cucumber, mint and sometimes ginger to jazz it up. Thanks for your question!

    Very informative.You’re so nice on responding to all the questions and comments.Been drinking hot lemon after lunch and cold lemon in the afternoon and hot lemon tea again after dinner for 3 days now and all i can say is i love the effects!!! i have a thyroid issue that causes water retention but doing this for just 3 days i feel lighter and the scale is moving down :) ill continue to drink this:) By the way iam also using calamansi (lime) which belongs to the citrus family also to alternate coz lemon is expensive here in our country(Philippines).

    hi I was always told to drink double your weight in water! for example I weigh 229 after a 26 pound loss recently.I drank double that in water and still doing it.it does work! ok I drink two 64 ounce bottles of water daily. when I get closer to my goal I go an ounce less in water.make sure your water is cold it helps burn more calories when walking working out etc.I have found cayenne pepper pills and cinnamon pills help with metabolism.no joke.along with the ice cold lemon water has helped me lose 26 pounds in two months.this is just my experience.October 5 2013I weighed 256.00

      You will have to determine what works best for you, Charles. There are many variables such as the size of the lemon and how much water you are drinking. Somedays I only drink the juice from one lemon. Other day it is up to three. See what is best for you.

      Bhuvana – I don’t recommend drinking straight lemon juice all day. But if you mean to drink lemon water, I do drink several glasses throughout my day. Just stay in tune with your body as you drink it so you don’t overdo it. Good luck.

Sometimes I also just cut the lemons up and put them in the water instead of squeezing them. It seems to work for me. Also, I prefer my water room temperature or warm.       Hi Gloria! I only make enough or one day — maybe two. And I keep the extra in the refrigerator. I don’t think it is as beneficial after one or two days as I always feel that fresher is better. But I could be wrong. Try it and let me know how it works for you!

      Rebecca – I personally don’t use artificial sweeteners. I know it takes time to get used to drinking unsweetened tea, but I feel so much better since I did. If you husband wants a sweetener in his tea and/or lemon water, please recommend that he try stevia as it is all natural and much better for his health. Let me know how he does with it. Hugs!

    Hello Katrina, thanks for sharing and that is so very true because I have drinking lemon water too but not for the purpose of loosing weight because I dont have much to loose..haha but its because I love drinking water and decided to take lemon water just to have a different taste. so for those who wants to lose weight they have to exercise ,but much you need to exercise or how fast you want to loose it depends on your efforts and the pounds that you have currently.

    I’ve also read up a lot on the benefits of drinking lemon water and concur with your findings.

    There are some things you can do to increase the enjoyment of this. While for many it will simply take time to adjust to the bland taste of lemon water, others may never really start enjoying it. I’ve found a couple of things help. First, adding lemon juice to carbonated water helps make it more refreshing. You can also supplement it with a little good quality store bought lemonade. This way you get a touch of sweetness, which just makes it taste better. But yes, the predominant additive would be the juice from a fresh lemon. I sometimes add a little lemon juice from a good quality store bought lemon concentrate. I don’t think it hurts, as long as a fresh lemon is included.

      Hmmm… I’m not sure that I noticed a big change in my skin or hair. Thankfully they were in good shape already.       Kelly, I’m not a doctor and don’t know if drinking lemon water will help you lose 10 pounds. I personally use lemons (not limes) and drink it throughout the day. I use anywhere from 1 – 4 lemons per day depending on how juicy they are. So experiment with the right amount for you. Good luck!

      This was a year ago and I don’t remember the exact amount of weight I lost, Tiffany. I think it was 4 – 5 lbs over about 2 weeks. But I’m not positive. My flat tummy comes from doing exercise, not so much from the lemon water. I hope that helps. :-)

    What I do is wash the lemon very well and slice(with rinds)in bits into my stainless steel water bottle to work..and whenever its empty,I just refill the bottle and leave for about 30mins bfore drinking again.and make sure I chew the inner parts at nite bfor bed. is this okay or do I peel off the rind,bfore slicing into the bottle..thank you

    My question to you is. Is it safe to drink the lemon water throughout the day I have a hard time drinking just plain water.     I agree the lemon water does help with the digestion and weight loss. I also add cucumbers and cayenne pepper to increase the metabolism. This may be a silly question but I must ask. :-) How long can you keep the lemon mixture before having to replace the lemons? Thank you.

      That is a good question. Some days I cut up one lemon and use it the whole day (sometimes two.) Other times I use fresh lemons each time. It depends how motivated I am and how many lemons I have. Thanks for asking, Kim!

The Pastor advised us that we should first thing early in the morning take a glass of warm water with an added fresh lemon, 30min before breakfast.
